Dateline: Bronzeville – A Runny Walker Mystery

DONALD BROOKS JONES & PHILIP MALLORY JONES

Dateline: Bronzeville is a fast-paced mystery adventure set on Chicago’s South Side in 1940.

Dateline: Bronzeville features Runny Walker, a veteran photojournalist for The Chicago Advocate. He’s a man about town who knows just about everybody, and where most of the bodies are buried. His news beat is Bronzeville, where mysteries run deep and solving them can cost your life!

Dateline: Bronzeville has roots in the most significant and most under-reported event of the twentieth century, the Great Migration. Millions of African Americans fled the harsh realities of the Jim Crow South in great streams that followed the railways and highways north and west. They were in search of a better life and opportunity. The new home they made, like Bronzeville, altered the course of a nation.

Dateline: Bronzeville is the first in a series of Runny Walker Mysteries. It features scandal, corruption… and murder, while marking a collaboration of two brothers who are native sons of Bronzeville. The illustrated novella melds stunningly beautiful original artwork with a dynamic “ripped from the headlines” mystery tale.

Runny Walker is a new American hero and Dateline: Bronzeville transports the reader to a place and time unique in American history. It brings to life all the hustlers and ne’er-do-wells, strivers and survivors in the great Black Metropolis of America—Bronzeville.

“Dateline: Bronzeville offers a truly pleasing bringing together of important history with a lively, keeps-you-guessing crime story. The vibrant characters are distinct, and the settings are wonderfully atmospheric. The Bronzeville of the Forties comes alive for readers and for viewers of the beautifully-detailed illustrations that complement the text. Bravo Donald Brooks Jones and Philip Mallory Jones. Count us in for the next installment! I was consistently impressed by the way you conveyed the humanity of each of the characters. Each one is, in his or her own way, formidable. The deft way you include folk sayings, proverbs, instances of the vernacular–always with a feel for how they fit with and advance the story–is also impressive.”
